THE WORKSHOPS IN MORE DETAIL

Understanding Watercolours – The Fundamentals

In a radical and exciting way, students are shown why watercolours are so different from every other medium. Learn how to combine colours, control blending and use the paint effectively. Build up various exercises throughout the day with the culmination of a finished painting or two! You will be amazed at how much you will learn in a few short hours even if you have been painting for years! All equipment is provided but feel free to bring your own kit.

Understanding reflections and painting water

Have you ever wondered how to make a body of water shine so that it actually looks like water? It’s all about the reflections, but they behave in many different ways according to conditions. To start with students will study reflections by watching a fantastic presentation on the screen. Everyone will produce a sketch and make a painting plan followed by a step by step tutorial to create a finished watercolour painting of a lake at sunset. Very inspiring! All equipment is provided but feel free to bring your own kit.

NEW  Peak District landscape in watercolour

Painting a rocky landscape such as one you might see in the Peak District is extremely challenging in watercolour. In this workshop you will learn how to modify content from a photograph and how to tackle each feature in the landscape. Skies, rocks, countryside terrain, grasses and paths are covered and all with just three colours! All equipment is provided but feel free to bring your own kit.

NEW  Impressionism in watercolour

Impressionism relies on human perception. Instead of realistic detail in a painting, a series of brush strokes represent light and form which are then interpreted by the viewer. Most impressionistic paintings feature a focal point often in finer detail which then persuades the viewer of the overall aspect of the scene. In this workshop you will study the importance of bold energetic brush strokes, the use of wet into wet blending, focal points and depth. This is a fantastic workshop for those who find themselves embroiled with fine detail and wish to loosen up! All equipment is provided but feel free to bring your own kit.

Painting dramatic watercolour skies

Skies are problematic for any watercolour artist. A sky is very often the largest area in a landscape and yet it should be executed in the shortest time. Using broad washes with large brushes, controlling the pigment and learning to paint quickly are all part of this exciting workshop. Students will go home with several painted skies and at least one finished piece of work. This totally fresh approach to painting skies in watercolour may just change your style forever! All equipment is provided but feel free to bring your own kit.

NEW  Contrast & light in the landscape

Contrast is vital to the creation of light and depth in any painting. We often observe a scene with full sunlight casting strong shadows whilst the distant sky is dark and oppressive, perhaps due to a passing storm. This exciting workshop features line & wash drawing, the use of masking fluid, vibrant colours and the principal of leaving white space. All equipment is provided but feel free to bring your own kit.

Line & wash street scene with human figures

In this workshop we will study how to represent realistic human figures by first sketching and then painting. We will create a street scene on a wet day populated with people featuring umbrellas and reflections. All of this will be done in the very popular line and wash style where everything is drawn first with a waterproof pen and the paint added afterwards. All equipment is provided but feel free to bring your own kit.

Spring/Autumn woodland

This workshop will show you how to paint a forest of trees without leaves with a strong sense of light and long spring/autumn shadows. You will also learn how to create incredible depth in a painting along with some amazing watercolour techniques. Your family and friends will be truly amazed at what you will take home. All equipment is provided but feel free to bring your own kit.

Winter landscape

Painting snow in watercolours is both fascinating and challenging. Rarely is white paint used  witrh watercolours. Instead space is left on the white paper, often refered to as negative painting. However, snow is never pure white so the negative areas have to be gently coloured. This workshop examines all the techniques used to create snow in a landscape and also features a stormy winter sky, trees and bulidings.  All equipment is provided but feel free to bring your own kit.

Painting the sea in watercolour

Surely everyone’s favourite – beautiful coastal scenes. Learn how to create waves, rocks seaspray and energy using some amazing watercolour techniques. Skies, reflecting light and sandy beaches  also feature in this action packed workshop. All eqipment is provided but feel free to bring your own kit

Light, atmosphere & mist in watercolour

Atmosphere and mood in a watercolour painting is quite a challenge. Learn how to use the wet into wet technique on a grand scale to create beautiful blended misty effects. You will produce misty valleys, moody light and reflections in a very exciting workshop.  All equipment is provided but feel free to bring your own kit.
